Understanding an AGSL Diamond Quality Document
Provided by the American Gem Society Laboratories, an AGSL Diamond Quality Document ranks diamond cut, color and clarity on a numerical scale, with a zero score signifying the most desirable characteristics and a ten score signifying the least desirable characteristics. Your AGSL Diamond Quality Document documents your stone’s specific characteristics using the following guides:
Shape and Style: Diamond shape and cut
Measurement: Diamond's dimensions in millimeters
Cut Grade: Evaluation of the diamond's face-up appearance, design and craftsmanship, including Light Performance, Proportion Factors and Finish.
Light Performance: Evaluation of the diamond’s overall appearance from above.
Proportion Factors: Evaluation of the diamond's proportions, weight ratio and durability
Finish: Evaluation of the diamond's polish and symmetry
Polish: Evaluation of the diamond’s overall surface smoothness
Symmetry: Evaluation of the diamond’s shape, alignment, facet placement and evenness of the outline
Color Grade: Evaluation of the diamond’s absence of color, with zero (D) being the most desirable and ten (Z) the least desirable. Half points are used to accommodate all color grades
Clarity Grade: Evaluation of the diamond’s clarity under 10x magnification, with
zero (FL/IF) being the most desirable and ten (I3) the least desirable.
Carat Weight: Evaluation of the diamond’s weight to the third decimal
Comments: Notation of additional characteristics not previously mentioned, including a fluorescence rating of inert, faint, medium, strong or very strong
Clarity Plot: Map of the approximate size, type and position of inclusions
Proportion Diagram: Map of the diamond's actual proportions, including depth, table, girdle and culet
Depth: The height of a gemstone measured from the culet to the table
Table: The uppermost flat surface of the diamond
Girdle: Range of girdle thickness
Culet: Appearance, or lack thereof, of the culet facet
